The Wrath Of Man

James 1:19: Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

British Family Bible: For it is not at all agreeable to the Christian temper to be hasty and impatient; and he that is such will never be able to do what is prescribed by God and acceptable to Him under the Gospel.

Halls: For the mind of that man, who is taken up with wrath, cannot, for the time, be capable of doing the will of God, or bringing forth any good work.

Doddridge:For the wrath of man, even where it may be most ready to assume the title of religious zeal, worketh not, but on the contrary greatly obstructs, the righteousness of God; instead of promoting the cause of true religion in the world, it is a reproach to it, and a means of exciting the prejudices of mankind against it.

Proverbs 14:17: He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. 29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. 19:11: The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. 19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

Ecclesiastes 7:9: Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Titus 1:7: For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

I believe there is specific truth that can help free us from our anger. The truth is that I deserve to be in Hell. Whatever it is that I am angry about is not Hell. We have no right to be angry about anything on this side of Hell.

Isaiah 26:3: Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

When we are angry we are not at peace. We are not thinking about the love of God or His promises. It can be difficult to change our thoughts from what we are angry about to thoughts about Him. It is helpful to remember that He has forgiven us for much more than we have forgiven those we are angry with. Also, our loving and sovereign God has put or permitted in our lives what we are angry about.
